100% agree, I remember in the 90s being amazed that I could talk to someone in another country over something like Fidonet without paying
for long distance calls, was kind of crazy at the time :)
I hear you - in the first half of the '90s, you could get mail through
the backbones with just an overnight call. In the later half of the
90s, I discovered internet/Fido transport, and set my system to poll my
uplink several times a day. Getting mail the same day from around the
world from an old DOS box in the corner was an incredible leap.
